August 7-10th: Alterna to Exhibit at FAHRO 2012
Alterna will be exhibiting at the Florida Association of Housing & Redevelopment Officials (FAHRO) 2012 Annual Convention and Trade Show, which will be held at the Walt Disney World Yacht and Beach Club Resort in Orlando, Florida. Alterna will be showcasing its widely acclaimed water conservation solutions, including Caroma dual flush toilets and SSI Tapware and Fluid high efficiency faucets and shower systems. Alterna also will be featuring Richlite recycled paper composite countertops and the Greenworks Cabinetry line of sustainable cabinetry and millwork, which are ideal for affordable housing projects seeking better quality and craftsmanship, not to mention improved air quality and resource conservation. FAHRO was established nearly 70 years ago to facilitate the exchange of information for the purpose of improving low income and affordable housing and community services. Since then, FAHRO has grown to represent more than 200 housing agencies, community development agencies, and associate members who work together to ensure that all of Florida’s citizens have clean, safe, and sanitary housing. August 25, 2010: Alterna to Exhibit at “Mayors’ Green Initiatives for Economic Growth: Greening Hotels & Businesses
Alterna is proud to be an exhibitor at the “Mayors’ Green Initiatives for Economic Growth” event, which will be held at the Miami Beach Convention Center on August 25th. The event is inspired by the Mayor of Miami-Dade County and the Mayor of the City of Miami Beach’s commitment to supporting a prosperous economy while conserving South Florida’s resources and unique ecosystem. This half-day educational program, which includes workshops and a tradeshow, is geared toward hotels and businesses in South Florida. Hotels will receive training in the revised Florida Green Lodging Program by special guest instructor Brad Stombock of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. A concurrent workshop will be held for businesses seeking to reduce waste and save money by conserving water and energy.

January 20, 2010: Alterna to Provide AIA CEU Course on Bamboo at USGBC Miami Branch Meeting
At the January 2010 monthly member meeting of the Miami-Dade and Keys Branch of the South Florida Chapter of the USGBC, Nick Gunia, LEED AP, and President of Alterna Corp., will present a program entitled "Bamboo in a Green Design Environment.” This program is registered with the AIA Continuing Education Systems (CES) for continuing professional education. Credit earned on completion of this program will be reported to CES for AIA members. Certificates of completion for non-AIA members are available upon request.
After completion of this educational program on bamboo, participants will be able to:
- 1) Develop an understanding of growing, harvesting and manufacturing with bamboo;
- 2) Recognize the process that contributes to a quality bamboo product;
- 3) Understand how bamboo from different manufacturers may contribute to a variety of LEED credits in a certified building; and
- 4) Write CSI standard specifications to ensure the quality and sustainability of bamboo used in the project.

Miami-Dade County recently passed an important ordinance that will require high efficiency plumbing fixtures for all new construction, both residential and commercial. On June 30th, the Miami Branch of the South Florida Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council will be offering a seminar about the implications of the ordinance. The seminar is highly recommended for architects, designers, engineers, contractors, plumbing industry professionals and anyone interested in water conservation.
